Announcement of the ERRC new Legal Director

The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) is pleased to announce the
appointment of Ms Geraldine Scullion as its new Legal Director.

The Legal Department of the ERRC challenges human rights abuses of Roma
throughout Europe through strategic litigation and legal training in
human rights law. It raises awareness by publicising research, legal
materials and legal cases. The ERRC takes a lead role in combating the
discrimination that Roma continue to face all over Europe. Through legal
challenges it ensures that national legislations meet international
human rights standards and where existing legal practices fail to meet
these criteria, these are changed.

As Legal Director Geraldine will have responsibility for the strategic
legal direction of the ERRC and will advise the Board and the Executive
Director of the Centre in this regard. As the ERRC is one of the
prominent public interest law organisations in the field of Roma rights,
this appointment will have a significant impact on the ERRC and on the
international field of Roma rights.

Geraldine, a lawyer with more than 20 years experience, has specialised
in equality, anti-racism and anti-discrimination law. Geraldine brings
to the ERRC her wide experience of human rights law and practice having
worked previously with the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland and
governmental equality institutions in Bulgaria, Estonia, Slovenia and
Hungary.

Her experience in EU anti-discrimination legislation, her project
management abilities and her leadership skills are demonstrated by her
track record. Prior to joining the ERRC she was the Senior Legal Officer
leading the projects team in the Strategic Enforcement Division of the
Equality Commission for Northern Ireland and she also acted as the
Commission’s Legal Director for 9 months.

Geraldine said “I am delighted be joining such a dynamic team at the
ERRC which is leading the way in challenging human rights abuses and
discrimination against Roma. I am particularly looking forward to
bringing my Northern Ireland and EU expertise and experience to my new
role”.

The ERRC strongly believes that Geraldine will bring to the organisation
and the Roma rights movement a creative drive to build on the Centre’s
achievements and to bring about tangible change in the life of Roma
people.
